Configure a Fast Recovery Area

Fast Recovery Area or FRA is used for recovery related files. Files like database backups, flashback logs, copy of control file, mirror copy of redo log files ..etc. are stored in FRA. To configure FRA you have to set two parameters DBA_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE and DBA_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST.

In this post I will show how you can setup FRA via command line utility.

List specific parameters for fast recovery area

SQL> show parameter db_recovery

NAME                                 TYPE        VALUE
------------------------------------ ----------- ----------------------------------
db_recovery_file_dest                string      /u01/app/oracle/fast_recovery_area
db_recovery_file_dest_size           big integer 4122M

I already have setup FRA, so for the purpose of this post I will change the destination and size of the FRA.

Change destination.

SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest='/u02/fra';

System altered.

Increase FRA size.

SQL> alter system set db_recovery_file_dest_size=10G;

System altered.

Remember that for RAC DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST must be set to the same value on all instances.
